In Fossacesia (Chieti), between the sky and the sea, the majestic Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere stands tall. It is considered one of the most interesting examples of Benedictine architecture in Abruzzo. The monastic complex, composed of a church and monastery, is found in an isolated location on top of a steep hill called the Promontory of Venus, dominating the gulf of the same name. It looks out over a wonderful landscape that stretches from the Maiella mountains to the Adriatic coast. In this area, a temple dedicated to the goddess Venus the mediator stood in ancient times, inspiring the name of San Giovanni in Venere.
The Benedictines offered Abruzzo’s population examples of strong and tenacious skill and because of their resourcefulness and organization, led the way to the start of the Agrarian Revolution.
