Borgo Castelvecchio

Historically important from the time of the Etruscans, with the Lombards and through the whole of the Middle Ages to the French domination.  It’s thick stone walls have seen a lot of Italian history.  The Viscontis from 1279 to 1339, the Salimbenis from 1369 to 1429 were the owners of Castelvecchio, who in a game of alliances and alternating loyalties, sometimes united with the Guelphs, other times with the Ghibellines.

In the 17th century, four farms in Castelvecchio passed to the Bandinellis, lords of Siena and also owners of Montalcino, Castiglion del Bosco, Abbadia Ardenga and Campiglia. The Monte marquises had Castelvecchio until 1900, when the entire property passed as a dowry to the young Antonietta, who married Count Alberto. Morelli Ademari. In 1959 the entire property was purchased by the De Angelis. Today it is owned by the De Angelis-Gaetani d’Aragona. In its territory, another important castle dominated the Val d’Orcia, that of Perignano, which was destroyed in the last furious fight against the Sienese in 1456. Its door still protects the entrance to the Villa of Castelvecchio today.
